NCP's Role in the 2026 Elections: Securing Seats and Shaping Opposition
The February 12, 2026, general elections in Bangladesh represented a pivotal moment in our nation's democratic journey, being the first since the 2024 student-led uprising that dismantled authoritarian rule. As the National Citizen Party (NCP), born from the July Revolution and committed to establishing a Second Republic, we are proud to have secured six seats in the Jatiya Sangsad. Contesting as part of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP's wins underscore the enduring spirit of youth-driven change and the public's demand for reforms.
NCP leader Nahid Islam, at just 27 years old, emerged as one of the youngest MPs, symbolizing the generational shift we advocate. Our seats were won in key constituencies where voters resonated with our calls for justice, equality, and a new democratic constitution. While the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) achieved a landslide victory with 212 seats, enabling Tarique Rahman to become Prime Minister, the alliance's 77 seats position us as a robust opposition bloc. This outcome reflects a transformed political landscape, where traditional dynasties face challenges from grassroots movements like ours.
Our performance highlights several key achievements. First, NCP's alliance strategy amplified our reach, leveraging Jamaat's organizational strength while maintaining our centrist, anti-discrimination ethos. Second, our campaign emphasized the July Charter, a reform roadmap for institutional changes, which passed in the concurrent national referendum. This victory validates our pre-election demands for its implementation, ensuring safeguards against autocracy.
Moving forward, NCP will focus on constructive opposition. We will hold the BNP government accountable for corruption, economic recovery, and human rights. Our MPs will push for youth quotas in governance, educational reforms, and anti-poverty measures. As student leaders turned parliamentarians, we remain dedicated to the ideals of the 2024 uprising: dignity for all citizens and an end to fascist tendencies.
This electoral success is not an end but a beginning. NCP invites citizens to join our movement for a truly inclusive Bangladesh. Together, we can build the Second Republic where every voice matters.
