July Charter Referendum Success: NCP's Vision for Institutional Reforms
The simultaneous national referendum on February 12, 2026, alongside the general elections, delivered a resounding endorsement of the July Chartera comprehensive reform agenda born from the 2024 uprising. As the National Citizen Party (NCP), we celebrate this milestone, which aligns perfectly with our founding mission to draft a new democratic constitution and eradicate systemic corruption.
The July Charter, negotiated over 18 months under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, outlines key reforms: judicial independence, electoral transparency, anti-corruption mechanisms, and protections for human rights. Its passage, with overwhelming public support, prevents a return to the autocratic rule that plagued Bangladesh under Sheikh Hasina. For NCP, this is validation of our steadfast advocacy; we refused to sign incomplete versions in 2025, insisting on inclusive recommendations from the National Consensus Commission.
With the BNP now in power, NCP's six MPs will prioritize the Charter's implementation. We urge the new government to integrate its provisions into law swiftly, including establishing a Senate for balanced representation and reforming security forces to curb abuses. Our alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami strengthens our opposition voice, ensuring these reforms benefit all citizens, regardless of faith or background.
Critics may question the alliance, but NCP remains committed to our centrist values: anti-fascism, unity, and progress. The Charter's success empowers youth like our leader Nahid Islam to lead on issues such as women's rights and education access. It also addresses economic woes, proposing job creation tied to sustainable development.
As we enter this new parliamentary era, NCP calls on Bangladeshis to stay engaged. The Second Republic isn't just a sloganit's a promise of dignity and equality. By holding leaders accountable, we can transform the Charter from words to reality, building a Bangladesh where justice prevails.
